Interactivity does not inherently mix well with an authored experience. The more tightly the author controls the story, the less agency the player has. The more agency the player has, the less the author can manage the plot. But the best video games manage to strike a balance. That is pretty magical.
Are you interested in delving into this dark art? Game writer and novelist Jim Munroe will be leading this month's Babycastles Academy workshop with the Texture Writer tool he created with Juhana Leinonen. Participants will have the hands-on experience of creating their own work while learning the basic principles behind mixing writing and interactivity as well as standard patterns in choice-based fiction.
This event is free, all ages, and open to the public.
It is highly recommended that everyone attending bring their laptop in order to participate in the exercises.
