STATE features four women performing movement variations that morph through a range of physical, emotional and performative states. The women betray slight shifts in attitude, timing, structure and performative quality. At a time when the Handmaid’s Tale could be a reality and Roe vs. Wade is in jeopardy, the work evokes unity, power, humor, anger, and seeks to find agency within its own subtly oppressive structure. The minimalist choreography draws inspiration from our sexist political climate, jazz dance and Pilates.
