After January's omicron-imposed postponement, Fire Over Heaven will resume on February 17th with a fantastic bill featuring violinist/improviser Gabby Fluke-Mogul and the drums and guitar duo of Ian Douglas-Moore & Leo Suarez. Fluke-Mogul studied with Pauline Oliveros and Fred Frith in the Bay Area, before moving to New York just after the pandemic started in March 2020. Despite what most would consider inopportune timing, Fluke-Mogul has nevertheless managed to make a deep impression on this town's improvised music community through collaborations with Ava Mendoza, Joanna Mattrey and Cecilia Lopez, as well as a highly personal solo practice characterized by an exploratory grasp of extended techniques and a no nonsense commitment to the creative energy of the present moment. Or in their own words: "I think the ritual of playing solo...requires simultaneously witnessing myself and being as “in it” as possible"...Ian Douglas-Moore wears many hats. You may have seen him playing bass in the ecstatic post-punk band Gold Dime or guitar in David First's epic long tone orchestra, The Western Enisphere, or perhaps working the soundboard at previous editions of Fire Over Heaven. Here he'll be in a duo with Philly-based drummer and long-time collaborator Leo Suarez, whose output ranges from Alvin-Lucier like studies for snare drum to full blown fire music blowouts with some of Philly's finest. On the duo's single cassette release, Suarez's textural bumping and buzzing provide counterpoint and ballast to Douglas-Moore's "guitar-as-tone-generator" approach, an psycho-acoustic amalgamation that verges on the psychedelic.
Please note that we have adapted our covid policy slightly. We'll be requiring proof of vaccine and booster or negative covid PCR test result within the last 24 hours. Masking will also be required while inside. Our bar will remain closed for the time being but we will have water available. We’ll be limiting the audience to 30 so purchasing advanced tickets is highly recommended!
