Jazz and Self Determination 2021: The Oral History of Jazz Culture

The focus for the upcoming talk on Monday, February 22nd will focus on archiving and preserving the documents of Jazz history with:

Ed Rhodes - Educator, Jazz researcher and collector. He taught a course, The Jazz Avant Garde: 1956-1970, at The New School and was a charter member and presenter for the John Coltrane Music society, which met at the John Henrik Clarke House from 2000 to 2001. Ed is a collector and student of Jazz discographies and his research has been cited in published works on John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and Eric Dolphy.

Prof. Basir Mchawi- Educator, activist and journalist, he was editor of Black News (1970's), and is producer/host of Education at the Crossroads currently heard on WBAI-FM. Prof. Mchawi was a member of Brooklyn's EAST organization and had direct experience in the legendary weekend music sets that took place at 10 Claver Place. He was a founder of what became known as the International African Arts Festival and served as its chair for over a decade. He is also a founding member of UPAMA, the Ujima Pan African Media Archives.


Bernard Drayton
– Recording engineer and music producer. Bernard was the former Vice President and Music Director of Three Tree Productions, a commercial recording company that produced music for numerous well known advertising campaigns. He was also the recording engineer on John Coltrane’s final recording, the Olatunji Center Concert (1967) and he recorded the famous Milford Graves/Don Pullen duets from Yale University (1966). In the 1960’s, he was the sound engineer at the Blue Morocco, a jazz club in the Bronx, where he recorded many artists including Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Dorham, Joe Henderson, Jimmy Smith and Kenny Barron.

The panel will be moderated by Ras Moshe Burnett.
Ras is a Brooklyn born Jazz saxophonist, educator and historian. He is the creator of the Jazz and Self Determination series, commencing in the spring of 2018 and periodically co-hosted by Althea SullyCole.
