Milk Press Virtual Workshop: Dreaming the Unified Field + The Long Poem

Free - $20.00

Part of the weekly Milk Press Virtual Workshop series, produced by the Poetry Society of New York. With guest instructor Faith PadgettJorie Graham's "The Dream of the Unified Field" is a poem that moves like a tidal wave: the undergirding current sweeps up what seems impossible to hold in a single poem, and in so doing carries us, with all these seemingly disparate things, into one place, the place of the poem's meaning. This kind of underpinned, unification poem, especially one as long as Graham’s, is so rewarding in the way it travels, and yet to mimic its movement seems unimaginable, without the proper tools. In this course, we will embark on a deep exploration of Jorie Graham's long poem, "The Dream of the Unified Field" to understand her conception of a unifying metaphor, and to subsequently try our hands at "unifying fields" through the use of an undercurrent. Once we feel comfortable with the mechanisms in the poem, we will take up several exercises to begin considering our own "unified field" poems. At the end of the course, everyone will take away the first draft of a poem that moves via its undercurrent.**This virtual workshop will be held over Zoom. You should receive a link in your confirmation email.**
