Coding for Music provides a practice-based focus on digital sound synthesis techniques with Max programming language. Participants will learn the basics of Max software and the art of synthesizing and processing sound.

Each week, we will cover a different synthesis technique used by pioneering electronic music composers through critical listening sessions. Weekly coding assignments will include real-time digital signal processing in Max.

At the end of the course, participants will design their own unique synthesizer as their final project.

This course is suitable for beginners and open to all levels of musical experience.

HARDWARE & SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
- Computer or tablet with Zoom software installed
- Max software (a free-trial version is available for 30 days)
- Headphones
- A second screen for using Zoom is encouraged

INSTRUCTOR BIO
Dr. Zeynep Özcan is a sonic artist, singer, and author. She holds a Ph.D. in Music, an M.A. in History of Architecture, and a B.A. in Philosophy. Her work focuses on the design and composition of interactive virtual sound environments and the applications of animal behavior to sound art works. Works by Dr. Özcan have been performed and presented throughout the world in concerts, exhibitions, and conferences. As a musician, she plays piano and electronics and has performed with several bands and choirs. Dr. Özcan is currently a lecturer at the Department of Performing Arts Technology at the University of Michigan, School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Ticket holders may request to cancel reservations for a full refund up to 48 hours before the start of the event. Cancellation requests made within 48 hours of the start of the event or after it has started will not be honored. Reservations can be transferred to someone else anytime before the start of a class.​
