Sunday 2-3:30, explore the intersection between art and mathematics.
We will build an intuition of the mathematics of symmetry with a lightweight lecture and playful use of digital tools, “debug” artworks by M.C. Escher, and produce our own wallpaper patterns in breakout coloring exercises.
Materials provided. Please arrive on time to participate!

Mathematics is about more than numbers. Some of the “higher-level” mathematical concepts developed to make sense of infinity and symmetry in the world around us can be explored with basic shapes and language without fancy notation or equations. Group theory is one such field of mathematical study and will be the foundation of this interactive workshop.
Attendees will leave with a newfound understanding and appreciation of mathematics as well as their own drawings. The mathematical discussion will be guided by digital interactions, moments of debugging MC Escher’s artistic works, and exercises with pen and paper.
A practical portion will show through example how patterns are programmable algorithms, though no programming experience is required.
This event is free, all ages, and open to the public.
Presented by Alex Berke and a friendly mathematician.
