Often likened to the voices of Tom Waits and Sam Baker, and the lyricism and delivery of John Moreland and John Prine, No Depression says: New York based, singer-songwriter, “Bill Scorzari is a force. His songwriting is stellar, his picking above par and his voice fits his songs perfectly."
On the very day that Bill Scorzari was born, Bill’s dad (a preeminent New York Trial Attorney), met with the Dean of his law-school alma mater, and together, the two friends completed a “mock” application for young Bill’s immediate enrollment as a student of the law. Some twenty-seven years later, Bill graduated from that very same law school. And, thus began the long and formative passage upon which Bill was at first destined to follow in the footsteps and ethos of his proud father, and would later make his own footprints protecting the legal rights of others. That predestined path, is however, not the whole story.
When Bill’s dad passed at the age of 91, it marked a time of profound change, and it found Bill stepping further away from the daily doses of the law’s contested matters of the mind and closer toward full immersion in the art of musical expression of matters of the heart and of the human condition. The transition was however, neither sudden nor surprising, as Bill’s life-long fascination with music was something that his mom and dad had also shared and nurtured in him since his earliest years.
Bill picked up his first guitar at the age of 7. It was an acoustic, a gift from his mom and dad. Finding formal music lessons uninspiring, Bill preferred to sit for hours at a time with his guitar and record player, figuring out on his own, how to play what he was hearing on his favorite records. He later formed his first band with some of the older kids in and around his home town, and played his first club gig at the age of 13. His musical tastes grew to be “all-inclusive” as he explored playing different genres throughout his high school years. In college, the pile of text books at his bedside was over shadowed by a looming 100 watt Marshall full stack and a Fender Stratocaster which took up most of the limited space of his Freshman-year dorm room. Bill performed Eddie Van Halen’s “Eruption” at his Law School's 3rd year talent show, and while working as a trial attorney in the New York State and Federal Courts, he continued to experiment with different music projects. Shortly after reuniting with some of his childhood bandmates in 2008, he stumbled upon a Live-at-Paste recording of Justin Townes Earle performing “Mama’s Eyes.” It was the kind of life-altering moment that you hear a person speak of when you ask them to tell you their life story, and without hesitation they point you to that one moment, clear as day, when everything changed. The story and the lyrics were striking, the music was a perfect match and the performance and delivery were direct, captivating and flawless. It was the moment when Bill realized that devoting anything less than 100% of his focus and energies to a life centered on creating and performing his own music, would simply be not enough. There was no doubt what had to be done, and there was no looking back.
Bill began writing songs with his acoustic guitar again, about 70 or so, and with the encouragement of a close friend/local recording engineer, he recorded and released his debut album in 2011, formed a band with a group of local musicians, and began performing his own music live. It was an important early step on the musical journey that even to this day, continues forward as if effortlessly at every turn.
A few years later at Grimey’s Record Store in Nashville Tennessee, during AmericanaFest 2015, Bill was introduced to Yep Roc recording artist, Jonah Tolchin. In November of 2016 Bill and Jonah met again, this time at the famed Bomb Shelter in East Nashville. There, together with musicians Joachim Cooder, Kim Richey, Will Kimbrough, Chris Scruggs, Laur Joamets, Eamon Mclaughlin, Brent Burke, John Estes, Danny Roaman, Kyle Tuttle and more (with Tolchin producing and with Engineer Billy Bennett), they recorded, mixed and mastered Bill’s second record, “Through These Waves” in just 14 days. When the critically acclaimed full-length album of all original songs was released in March of 2017 it jumped straight to #1 on the Americana Music Association’s Most-Added-Radio-Stations Top-50 chart, and later landed on many Top-Albums-of-2017 lists, including Folk Alley and Elmore Magazine. Bill has since shared bills with Sarah Jarosz, Sam Outlaw, The Dustbowl Revival, Tall Tall Trees, Seldom Scene, Billy Strings, Frank Fairfield, Tom Marion, Zak Sokolow, Jonah Tolchin, Jenni Lyn Gardner (Della Mae), Jeff Scroggins and Colorado, Twisted Pine, Whiskey Myers,  Big Country and others.
