Film Screening of Raided, with Red Hook Community Justice Center, Center for Urban Pedagogy

Brooklyn, New York
$17.18 (includes all fees)

Event description: Using the largest gang raid in New York City’s history as a starting point, “Raided,” a documentary film, examines the consequences of a new era of “precision policing” in the city. In contrast to Stop and Frisk, which targeted large swaths of New Yorkers, precision policing prides itself on singling out the supposed worst of the worst: gang members. The film explores precision policing’s use of coercive conspiracy prosecutions, the repurposing of old and low-level offenses, military-style raids, and racially disproportionate surveillance.

This summer, CUP collaborated with Teaching Artist Ro Garrido and students from the Red Hook Community Justice Center to investigate how Conspiracy Laws are used to police youth and charge them with “gang involvement” based on who they know. Students surveyed members of their community, interviewed stakeholders working on the issue, and made a teaching tool with designer Marcela Szwarc to show what they learned. At this special event, students will present their findings, followed by a free screening of the documentary film Raided.

The screening will be followed by:
• A presentation by students from the Red Hook Community Justice Center
on their investigation into conspiracy laws and NYPD’s gang database.
This project is a collaboration with Teaching Artist Ro Garrido, designer
Marcela Swarc, and the Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP).
• A conversation and Q&A with:
o Filmmaker Simon Davis-Cohen and featured members of the film,
and others directly impacted by gang raids.

FREE SCREENING! No one turned away for a lack a funds. Please consider
making a donation between $5-$15 to help us cover booking the space.
