The Trash Garden: A Staged Reading

Brooklyn, New York
$6.63 - $17.18 (includes all fees)

As far as apocalypses go, this one should feel pretty familiar...

Atlas and Evelyn are the last people on earth. Living in a landfill landscape of plastic single use waste and happy meal toys, they dig through debris weaponizing the greatest skill humans hold: play. The Trash Garden is speculative fiction told in a living circle, with your great-great-great grandchildren at the center; shining a brilliant and beautiful light on the human capacity to imagine a better life, build the deepest connections, and fight despair in the world they inherit from us. All while talking like pirates, breaking the fourth wall, hypothesizing what an elephant might have used its trunk for, and communicating with the conservation Grandpa, Sir David Attenborough.

Padraig Bond wrote The Trash Garden for this moment, where we are collectively choosing a future of perpetual red skies, gardens of garbage, and mass extinction. The Trash Garden is the final play in a cycle of twelve exploring the end of the world and the choices we are making to get there, written from the perspective of a Gen Z New Yorker.

Founded by Christina Marks as theater began it’s rebirth during the pandemic in New York City, VELVET GLOVE THEATER is a 501c3 theater company dedicated to supporting emerging artists and the production of new work. We aim to feed the fringe of live art and move forward, rather than return to, the glory days of New York theater. Velvet Glove Theater has committed to a sustainable, carbon neutral production of The Trash Garden for the summer of 2022, because we believe in utopia, and the grunt work it takes to get there.
