CURRENT STRATEGIES FOR COMPOSITION AND PERFORMANCE
2-5pm

for any instruments, voice, movement

In this 3-hour workshop, the participants will discuss and develop new strategies for creation and performance. These operations have been central to the innovations pioneered by New York-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sharp over four decades.

Included in the studies will be:

1. Natural Models As Compositional Inspiration and Strategy: Starting with E#’s 1974 'Hudson River Compositions,' fireflies and flocking birds, RNA replication, Fibonacci numbers, fractals, and cellular automata and other natural forms and processes all present useful models for structure and development.

2. Algorithmic and Self-Organizing Systems: Examination and playing Sharp's composition 'SyndaKit' : music as organism and music as permutational.

3. New approaches to graphic notation: 'Foliage', 'Mare Undarum', 'Sylva Sylvarum' and 'ReGenerate' represent a synesthetic approach based on processing the score itself through modulation, filtering, layering and inverting to create work that is both a score and guide to sonic pathways as well as purely retinal.
