Fire Over Heaven continues on Thursday, April 20th with sets by Raven Chacon and Amirtha Kidambi & Luke Stewart. Chacon made big news last year for being the first indigenous composer to win the Pulitzer prize, for his Voiceless Mass, but it's probably equally true that he is the first noise musician to win the award? Until recently based in Albuquerque, NM, where he was central to the south west DIY/noise scene, Chacon has always explored a lo-fi aesthetic of cracked and extreme sonics in parallel to the charged chamber music works that have recently brought him more widespread attention. It's fairly safe to say we'll be getting the basement noiser Chacon for this special solo set ... Amirtha Kidambi and Luke Stewart have both played at Fire Over Heaven before in other formations but it is a real joy to have them return as a duo. Kidambi is one of the deepest improvising vocalists working today, capable of transmuting elements of experimental, early music and South Indian vocal traditions through the cosmic sensibilities of John and Alice Coltrane. Luke Stewart is one of the busiest bassists in town (or any town), and has been steadily reviving and extending the free jazz tradition by pushing its boundaries into conversation with noise, rock and minimalism via electronics, feedback and a powerful command of both the "upright" and "guitar" forms of his chosen instrument, the bass. If the duo's first cassette, Zenith-Nadir, is any clue, we're likely to find them exploring dimensions acoustic-electric, noise-melodious, past and future now in the beautiful Outpost space.
