Aquaponics Basics (December 1, 10am - 12pm)

Learn how to grow vegetables and freshwater fish in a recirculating ecosystem. In this extensive class, you'll gain a detailed overview from Yemi Amu, Founder of Oko Farms - NYC's largest outdoor aquaponics farm & education center. In this 2 hour course participants will learn: history of aquaponics, basic science of aquaponics, plant propagation in a soilless medium, fish selection and management, design options with a focus on simplicity,.

This workshop is ideal for gardeners, teachers, home enthusiasts, sustainability enthusiasts, and the curious interested in learning alternative farming methods and reducing their environmental footprint. Participants will leave this unique class with the foundational knowledge required to start and maintain their own aquaponics gardens.

Part 2 of 2
Aquaponics Design and DIY Build (Dec 4, 6pm - 8pm)

The second of a 2-part series.

Learn to build your own aquaponics system using simple and easily accessible materials. The class will begin with an in-depth coverage of the various hardware components in an aquaponics and the role of each in supporting the ecosystem. Then dive in by constructing a small-scale aquaponics system perfect for the home or classroom. Finally, you'll leave with a full materials list and the confidence to get your own home system up and running.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Yemi Amu is the co-founder of Oko Farms and the Farm Manager at the Moore Street Farm. She directs all of Oko Farms' programs including education, design/build projects and community related activities. She has facilitated the creation and maintenance of 20 edible spaces (in NYC) at schools and community organizations including a rooftop farm in Crown Heights and a 1/4 acre farm at the Weeksville Heritage Center that included poultry and bees.
