July 26th Marks the 30th anniversary of the ADA. The disability rights movement in the United States was one of the the most powerful civil rights movements and yet at the same time one of the most invisible movements to have occurred. Disability is the largest minority in the world and unlike other minorities it remains the most invisible minority because when we look at history the stories of disability have not really ever been written. We know about Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Harvey Milk, Marsha P. Johnson, Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinman. These are all names we have heard about, but names like Judy Heumann, Ed Roberts, and Hale Zukas are names left unknown. Sharing the stories of people with disabilities is necessary so we can understand why something like the ADA is so important to any person living with a disability and why the fight for more rights is necessary. On July 30th DIYabled and REVOLVE will have an evening of "Stories from the Disabled". You will have a chance to hear the stories of people that are living with disabilities right now.
