BREAKING WAVES: FUNDAMENTAL TOOLS & METHODS FOR SOUND DESIGN
for women-identifying and non-binary artists
Back by popular demand, this workshop is an extension of our NEW WAYS OF LISTENING class, where participants will dive deep into the fundamental tools and methods for sound design.
This course is for anyone working in (or with ambitions to work in) audio media—documentary, fictional or artistic.
Topics will include
- sound design fx (reverb, delays, filtering and eq-ing)
- an introduction to acoustic and musical concepts (spatialization and quantizing)
- maximizing digital resources on a budget
- surveying the mainstay Digital Audio Workstations available on the market
- employing sound design choices thoughtfully and creatively
Shani will present experimental and creative works from the world of radio drama, music and film as sources of inspiration and references for sound design ideas.
The workshop is suitable for those with a basic working knowledge of audio editing software.

INSTRUCTOR BIO
Shani Aviram is a composer and sound designer based in Philadelphia. Her work has been heard on The Heart, Radiolab, BBC, Audible Originals and The CBC and she has taught sound design workshops at the University of Pennsylvania and Rowan University. Shani's compositions have been performed at Virginia Tech’s CubeFest and Megapolis Audio Festival. She is also a member of Philly\AV, a multimedia collective focused on interactive audio-visual performances.
