Weird MTG: Top of the Trash Heap Cube

New York, New York
$6.63 - $11.90 (includes all fees)

Doors at 4:30, draft at 5:00
$5 donation requested for the use of Babycastle's space

Weird MTG is back! This time we’re revisiting one of my favorite events that I ran last year. The Top of the Trash Heap Cube is made of 650 cards, all rares, all worth fifty cents or less.

For those unfamiliar, a cube draft is a booster draft format where the packs are created form an existing, curated collection of cards with no repeats. In this draft, packs will be made entirely from the worst (or at least lowest valued) rares in the game.

I’ll be providing the cube. All you need to bring is a $5 donation to Babycastles, who have graciously agreed to host. There will be a small prize for the winner.

You can view the cube here: https://tappedout.net/mtg-cube-drafts/top-of-the-trash-heap/

╬═Why?═╬
In the past, I’ve had great fun with what I’ve known as “crap drafts.” In these drafts, players brought 45 rares with the knowledge that everybody would be going home with the cards they drafted. This of course, encouraged players to bring their worst rares—the ones they would never miss. The fun part of these drafts was using these unwieldy, bad cards to actually win. Because the card pool consisted of only bad cards, many of those “bad” cards became playable, even good! And in fact, many of these cards were interesting and fun, but were just too awkward or slow or expensive to see even casual play.

The down side was the number of cards that were truly unplayable either because they were far too niche: Aven Shrine (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Aven+Shrine) is not interesting if you can’t count on getting multiples. Or because they were truly were bad: nobody needs a Mudhole (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=31740). This cube aims to capture the best of elements crap draft: unusual, fun, awkward cards in a space where they are actually playable. This presents a novel deck building challenge as well because players must evaluate cards on the fly in a space very different than a typical booster draft environment.

╬═Who is this for?═╬
As always, this will be a fairly casual environment. There will be a small prize for the winner, but the primary goal at these events is to have fun exploring a new aspect of the game. You don’t need to be a pro and asking questions about the rules or specific cards is more than encouraged. Brand new players are welcome too, but because draft requires you to evaluate cards as you build your deck, it would be good to play a round or two beforehand to get the basics.

╬═What is Weird Magic? ═╬
Weird Magic is a series of Magic: The Gathering events/tournaments that focuses on unusual or overlooked parts of the game. Often it will involve making proxy versions of cards. This time it is about using real cards that probably don’t see too much play, but in the past we’ve done proxy tournaments using only cards from 1996 as well as a RoboRosewater booster draft.
