This is a special moment of our region’s calendar, the height of autumn, the glowing sunset of the solar year. Taking apples off the trees, making mountains of jars filled with pickles and tomato sauce, throwing down on delicious food experiments is compounded by the completion of a five-acre labryrinth cut into a field of goldenrod.
The Mazyrinth is the site of a very challenging team game that will test endurance, mental concentration and tactical ingenuity. The game requires that one camera per team photograph 14 objects/symbols/numbers distributed in the new goldenrod maze in the correct sequence. This is a new game for teams of 3 or 4, and each member of the winning team will receive a full ticket refund and extra provisions as prize!
Apple Harvest:
This has been a really weird year for apples but we should be able to gather enough to make a sufficient quantity of sauce, dried apples, cider and apple cider vinegar to share among the harvesters.
Pickling/Canning:
Dilly Beans for the year, tomato sauce (if the tomato crop holds out) for the winter. Perhaps some actually fermented pickle, such as curtido (Salvadorean cabbage) which keeps for months.
Bonus Opportunity for Democracy:
Friday, October 12th, is the last day to register new voters in New York State for election on November 6th. The congressional race in the 19th District is anticipated to be one the the closest in the nation, which makes victory there extremely important. We would like to organize a team to go to the college campuses in Oneonta (9000 students) on Thursday and/or Friday afternoon to register voters. This may prove to be impractical but, if not, it could be a meaningful contribution to the fight against the waking nightmare that is blighting our lives. Transportation, room and board for this pre-weekend effort would be provided.
