Join us for the virtual edition of the Breaking Bread series, a gathering hosted at Mayday Space in collaboration with leading social justice organizations. Our aim is to bring together members of grassroots groups and the politically-engaged public to sharpen our strategies, celebrate our wins, and strengthen our movements for transformative change.
At a moment of tremendous Black-led popular resistance, we’re honored to partner with Communities United for Police Reform, the people power behind the #SaferNYAct measures that passed thru the New York State legislature last week and key players in the fight to #DefundNYPD in this critical final week of NYC budget negotiations.
HOW THE BREAKING BREAD SERIES WORKS:
During each gathering, the partner group has 30 minutes to present their victories, challenges, and lessons learned with those assembled. This is a chance to create connections between issues, and for organizations to solicit volunteers, donors or campaign advice (if desired) in whatever format they choose. The Mayday crew then helps facilitate small group conversations on movement strategy. Usually this is done over a prepared free meal at our space, but this time we’ll be using breakout rooms in Zoom where participants can share opportunities to engage meaningfully in efforts to end policing as we know it.
MORE ABOUT THIS MONTH’S PARTNER:
Communities United for Police Reform (CPR) is an campaign first launched in 2012 to end discriminatory policing practices in New York, bringing together a movement of community members, lawyers, researchers and activists to work for change. The partners in this campaign come from all 5 boroughs, from all walks of life, many grounded in an abolitionist framework, representing many of those most unfairly targeted by the NYPD.
ABOUT MAYDAY:
Mayday Space is a collectively-managed organizing and social hub for grassroots groups, neighborhood residents, artists and activists from across NYC (and beyond!) to hold classes, training, meetings, film screenings, retreats, conferences, art builds, and all-ages events on an affordable sliding scale. While our space is closed due to the COVID-19 crisis, we offer on-line programming and support mutual aid and movement organizing efforts on the ground. Inbox us if you want to get involved in planning other on-line events like this.
