In April, our guest speaker will be local artist and ecological designer Carmen Moreno, who will tell us about Mycofiltration and their upcoming public art installation, Mushrooms 4 Clean Water, in Gowanus.

Carmen Moreno

I am a visual artist, writer, performer, and ecological designer. I work as an independent researcher and am interested in the intersections of creative practice and scientific inquiry. I often examine the boundaries and relationships between earth and body, seeking to understand complex dynamics between the built environment and ecological habitats. Recently, exploring mushrooms and mycelium as a map, cartography, or model in nature for understanding properties of emergence. My current works draw upon explorations of place and belonging in relation to nature, land, water, sound, funga, and my cultural identity as first-generation Mexican American.

Mushrooms 4 Clean Water

Mushrooms 4 Clean Water is a civic science initiative focused on stormwater management, mycoremediation, and floodplain mitigation. This hands-on learning platform will provide lectures, workshops, and walking tours to explore the Gowanus watershed, and propose potentials for incorporating mycleim and fungi into a patchwork of green infrastructures. This project will host local organizations and community researchers to share their knowledge and expertise through community engagement that is free and open to the public.

Mycofiltration

Mycofiltration uses fungal mycelium, or root-like structures, to filter and clean contaminated water. This low-cost, low-tech method uses fungi to break down pollutants like microplastics, petroleum, bacteria, pesticides, and heavy metals, as well as to absorb nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus from water as it passes through the mycelial body. Mycofiltration was discovered by Paul Statements and is being explored as a component of stormwater management and other water treatment systems.
