"There is a hesitation to say Auto (bio-graphic), since Jeffrey’s work is at once quite personal, specific, yet also deeply intertwined and reflective of life and history before us, shared; such that I too, before a basketball hoop, or a bowl of cotton, balanced on a pile of books, covered with tar, am drawn into the mix of black and white, into the play of losing oneself in a mirror — its strange and haunting clarity, astonishment, and joy; yes, joy, which carries over and through."

Jeffrey Kent is an American multidisciplinary artist and curator whose work embodies healing and wellness through creativity, mentorship, and stewardship. His oeuvre is deeply conceptual, intertwining the historical and the personal to create resonant works. Kent skillfully employs a diverse selection of mediums, meticulously chosen to match both the thematic elements and emotional nuances of the dialogues he aims to stimulate. His sculptural works and bricolage pieces underscore the socio-political significance of ordinary found objects, inviting critical reflections on their narratives. Kent actively engages in the development of live performance and community investment projects to address accessibility challenges within the contemporary art world. His commitment to inclusivity fosters meaningful interactions among diverse audiences, ensuring that art remains a vital channel for dialogue and understanding. By dismantling barriers that often prevent engagement, he works to make the art world more representative of various voices.

He founded Subbasement Artist Studios (2004-2014), an alternative art space in Baltimore that served as the first studio for renowned artist Amy Sherald. This innovative space supported artists in their creative journeys while nurturing a sense of community. He also co-owned Unexpected Art Space (2013-2016), a venue providing local artists a platform to showcase and sell their work. Additionally, he co-founded Connect+Collect (2018 - present), an initiative that raises awareness among collectors and provides professional development for Baltimore-based artists while promoting a culture of collecting within the city.

In 2025, Kent launched the Bliftd Stvdio Project, aimed at further expanding creative spaces for collaboration and engagement among artists and the community. Currently, Kent is concluding his role at The Peale, America’s first building designed as a museum, where he mentors apprentices and emerging artists through his initiative, Accomplished Art Apprentices. This program educates young people from marginalized communities in skills such as art handling and installation.

Kent also teaches as a fine art professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art, influencing the next generation of artists. His work is represented in esteemed collections, including the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, National Academy of Sciences, Reginald F. Lewis Museum, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, American Visionary Art Museum, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). Through his innovative practice and commitment to the arts, Kent continues to inspire and empower both artists and communities.
