Re-Invent 女: Radical 38 Workshop

Oakland, California
$2.40 - $22.46 (includes all fees)

Re-Invent 女: Radical 38 with artist + curator Qianqian Ye
Sunday, February 16th, 2:30 - 5pm

Join us for Re-Invent 女: Radical 38, a 2.5 hr workshop focusing on the radical 女 (nǚ), which means "woman" or "female" in Chinese. Using tools from calligraphy brush to software, workshop participants are encouraged to create new strokes, radicals, and characters. The language re-invention will be themed around gender and body representation, labor and tools, family structure and the reproductive system, and others. All the invented characters will be archived in a dictionary, which will be open-sourced later.
The language is not created the best way for us to perceive gender. What can language re-making tell us about how reality might be otherwise? Who has the right to reimagine the languages/genders/futures? What are the limits of language when it comes to speculating the world differently? Are there things that escape language?
