For October’s game of the month, we will be playing Devotion.

Developed by Taipei-based studio Red Candle Games, Devotion is a first-person horror game inspired by East Asian folklore. The story, set in a Taiwanese apartment complex during the 1980s, follows a failing screenwriter, Du Feng Yu (Boren Cheng), his wife, retired singer Gong Li Fang (Pinling Chen), and their daughter, Mei Shin (Cindy Liu), who become increasingly involved with a cult after Mei Shin gets sick. With a focus on environmental storytelling and non-linear plot, Devotion received critical acclaim in the U.S. when released on Steam in February 2019.

However, a week after the game was released, Red Candle Games was forced to remove it from the Steam Store globally due to severe backlash from mainland Chinese players over controversial in-game artwork. The ramifications from mainland China's government later resulted in their Shanghai-based publisher, Indieevent, to have their business license revoked. The studio announced in July that they are giving up on bringing the title back to Steam and have no plans for a sequel or to license the intellectual property out.
