For January’s game of the month we will be playing The Flame in the Flood.

Developed by The Molasses Flood and released in 2016, The Flame in the Flood is a roguelike survival adventure video game where the player must try to survive a river journey through the backwaters of a post-societal America.

Described by one of the game’s developers called a "travelling survival game;" the player controls a young girl referred to as Scout accompanied by her dog called Aesop as they journey down river visiting a series of randomly generated islands created by an apocalyptic flood. The player must pay attention to Scout's needs such as her energy, thirst, hunger, and warmth, as well as fend off hostile wildlife to avoid death. Like other roguelikes, death is permanent, although the player can restart at predetermined checkpoints along the river. Fundamental to the game is a crafting system that allows the player to create new items by scavenging the area for valuable materials.

The Flame in the Flood is available for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
